Once water finds a way in, gravity and capillary action pull it downward and sideways behind the siding — often traveling several feet from the actual entry point before it starts doing visible damage. That's why a stain near a first-floor window can trace back to a flashing gap up at the roofline.

What's Actually Happening Inside the Wall

Once moisture is trapped behind siding, the sequence is fairly predictable. Wood-based sheathing (OSB or plywood) absorbs water and swells. If it stays wet — which it will, if the assembly has no way to dry — fungal decay sets in within weeks, not years. From there:

Early stage

Sheathing darkens and softens slightly. No visible exterior sign yet. This stage is only caught through moisture meter readings or invasive inspection.

Mid stage

Sheathing loses structural integrity, framing members at the wall base or window sills start absorbing moisture, and mold or mildew colonizes the wall cavity. Exterior paint may start bubbling or siding may feel slightly spongy when pressed.

Late stage

Structural rot in studs, sill plates, or header framing. Siding visibly bows, cracks, or separates from the wall. Insulation is saturated and has lost most of its R-value. At this point, repair means opening the wall, not just replacing siding.
